4 Families of the Bible Activities & Crafts For Preschool Kids

I love talking about family in Sunday School!  It’s developmentally appropriate for preschoolers because it’s about them and easily relatable.  Here’s a look at some of the families of the Bible activities and crafts I use to help my preschool kids understand the big idea from this family Bible Unit: God gives us family as a blessing.

Interactive Anchor Chart

During this Families of the Bible activities unit, we study 5 families and learn something about our own families from each of the Bible stories. These Families of the Bible activities and unit include the following families:

  • Adam & Eve
  • Abraham & Sarah
  • Isaac & Rebekah
  • Ruth & Naomi
  • Joseph & Mary

Each of these families help us see that no family is perfect. We all have our problems. And some families even look a little different than others, like really old parents (looking at you, Abraham and Sarah) and a make shift family of Mother and Daughter-in-Law.

But even though our families aren’t perfect, and even though tragic things happen to our families, God blesses us with the gift of family!

I absolutely love the interactive charts we have for each of my Sunday School units.  I have a black and white anchor chart that stays posted in our preschool Sunday School room. Each picture on the chart represents a lesson from our families of the Bible activities unit. I have a velcro dot on each picture. At the beginning of our families of the Bible activities, we review all of the lessons or families we have talked about so far. I call up a preschool kiddo to add the color picture on the correct black and white picture. They get to practice matching skills. And I get to reinforce truths from the Bible! #winning

This interactive anchor chart also doubles as a puzzle station for kids to explore and do as kids are coming in during the first 15 minutes of our preschool Sunday School class.

Families of the Bible Centers

Exploration stations are one of my favorite parts of our Sunday School schedule.  They are inviting so it makes it easy for kids to transition from parents to class. And they help me to spark conversations about our Bible story from the second they walk in. We all know preschool kids can’t sit for a 45 minute class while you teach about all the important principles and truths from the Bible story.

But we can have bite size Bible moments during our exploration stations and reinforce them again during our Bible story time. And that repetition is the goal for young preschool kids!

This family exploration station is one of our all-time favs!  I know because we did this families of the Bible activities unit almost a year ago, and my kids still beg me to pull out the family house to play with it again! 🙂

In My Family I Have…

In our first families of the Bible lesson, we talk about the people God chooses to put in our family and how all families look different. Then, we build our own family using some family member cards I have precut for them. The kids color each family member and glue them on their page.

Family Tree Handprint Craft

Another family craft option is this handprint craft.  Sometimes I do one or the other.  This past year, I did both!  The cut and paste version at the beginning of the families of the Bible activities unit and the handprint at the end of the unit.  We use our handprints to show our own family tree.  Then, I write the names of people in their families in sharpie.
