Meet the Teacher

Hey, y’all, I’m Whitney! I love Jesus, my family, and teaching littles with my whole heart!

At school, I teach first grade.  I earned my Masters Degree in Early Childhood in 2006 just down the road at the University of Arkansas. {WOOOOO PIG SOOIE!} I landed my first job as a first grade teacher – the only grade I had NO experience in…yikes! – at a brand new school.  I was Scared.To.Death of first grade, but I absolutely fell in love on day one!  I’ve been in first grade since then and couldn’t imagine anything else… until my baby boy was born in 2012!

I taught 3 more years before I just couldn’t take it anymore and left the full-time classroom to be full time mom.  I’ve still stayed close to the classroom subbing (bless those subs, y’all!) and doing long-term maternity leaves. As of now, my mommy break is temporary, but I know this is exactly where I need to be for this season of life!

We went through a long infertility journey to have our son in 2012.  And we continued that journey to try and grow our family.  But God knew better and many years, tears, prayers and a miscarriage later, we gave our plans to him and ended up adopting newborn TWINS at 32 weeks in 2019!  You can read about that shocking journey here.

At church, I teach preschoolers in Sunday School and absolutely LOVE it!  I’ve taught this class for over 2 decades and I’ve gotta tell ya…. preschoolers are just my favorite!

My sweet family of FIVE…love them!

I started blogging in 2014.  On my blog, you can read about my journey teaching first grade at school and preschool at church.

In 2011, I started sharing my lesson plans and curriculum on TpT.  I am a “learning nerd” and have always been obsessed with brain research and making sure what I do in the classroom reflects best practices. In 2018, I went through our Arkansas state Science of Reading training and, a year later, became LETRS certified. That’s why all of the literacy lesson plans and materials in my store are aligned with the science of reading. It’s also why you’ll find math resources that follow the Cognitively Guided Instruction model.

But since my real life looks like teaching in public school and church preschool kids, my store includes both K-2 public school resources and Christian Education units that are perfect for Sunday School or Children’s Church.

If you’ve made it this far, welcome! Let’s be teacher besties! Sign up for my newsletter here and I’ll send you a free set of decodables and a few fun stories about my journey through faith, family and first grade!
