What does the research tell us about the best practices for anchor charts?

Years of research tells us that anchor charts are most effective when made WITH students, instead of printing prefilled posters and posting around your room. I like to set up the “bones” of the anchor chart before my lesson and then fill in the content “meat” during the lesson with the students to maximize effectiveness. After the lesson, I go back and add any colorful details I want to add. I strongly encourage you to use the prefilled charts in this resource as a reference point for making your own anchor charts with your kids! 🙂

HOW TO USE THESE FIRST GRADE FICTION VS NON FICTION ANCHOR CHARTS

This resource is super versatile with as much or as little help as you want to make first grade reading and writing anchor charts easy!

  1. Open to have digital charts on your smart or promethean board
  2. Print actual size anchor chart templates on white paper or colored paper–see demo pics. They are made to be put together for poster/anchor chart size to been seen easily hanging on your classroom wall.
  3. Print “handout size” to make mini-anchor charts to put on rings for your writing station or small group table.
  4. View the prefilled anchor charts templates as inspiration and a reference to make your own reading and writing anchor chart from scratch on chart paper.
